The founder of Agidigbo FM, Alhaji Oriyomi Hamzat, has explained his decision to declare his interest in the 2027 governorship election in Oyo State, saying it was inspired by divine direction and a desire to serve the people.
Hamzat, a popular broadcaster and philanthropist, recently announced his intention to contest the governorship under the Accord Party (AP). This development has generated mixed reactions across the state, particularly among his supporters and political observers.
Speaking during a live broadcast on Agidigbo FM on Monday, Hamzat revealed that his decision followed extensive consultations and deep personal reflection. According to him, although many of his advisers and supporters warned him against joining the race, he ultimately submitted the matter to God and received confirmation to proceed.
“The people of Oyo, my lovers, especially my advisers who warned me against contesting, I sincerely thank you all,” he said. “I listened to those who encouraged me and those who advised me not to contest. After weighing all the advice, I presented everything to God, and He approved my contesting.”
Hamzat stressed that his decision was not meant to disregard the concerns of those who cautioned him, noting that their advice was borne out of love and genuine concern for his well-being. He appealed to anyone who might have been offended by his declaration to forgive him and rally behind his ambition.
“I do not want to disobey God just to please people,” he added. “I believe you all love me, and that is why you advised me. If my decision has offended anyone, I humbly ask for forgiveness and your support now that I have declared my interest in the highest office of the state.”
The Agidigbo FM founder also expressed confidence in his ability to govern Oyo State with integrity, distancing himself from what he described as corrupt political practices. He said his ambition was driven by a genuine desire to serve the people and improve their living conditions.
“I want to serve the people and not be like most corrupt politicians,” Hamzat said. “I believe I will win because the people are with me, and I did not buy anyone to attend the event where I declared my interest.”
Dismissing the views of critics who insist he would not succeed at the polls, Hamzat said he had moved beyond fears of electoral defeat or manipulation. He maintained that his focus is now on mobilising support across the state.
“We have gone beyond the fear of whether I will lose or be rigged out,” he said. “I am asking for your support.”
Hamzat’s declaration adds a new dynamic to the Oyo State political landscape, as attention gradually shifts towards the next governorship contest.
