Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has appealed to the All Progressives Congress (APC) top leadership to intervene and stop the ongoing impeachment moves against him, describing the political maneuver as a “distraction” and urging calm for the sake of peace in the state.
Speaking during the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day at St. Cyprian’s Anglican Church in Port Harcourt, Governor Fubara emphasized the importance of unity and stability, calling for dialogue and restraint amid rising tensions.
In a significant development, two Rivers State House of Assembly members , Minority Leader Sylvanus Nwankwo (Omuma Constituency) and Peter Abbey (Degema Constituency) , have withdrawn their support for the impeachment motion against the Governor and his deputy.

During a press briefing in Port Harcourt, the lawmakers said their decision was influenced by appeals from respected elders and leaders both within and outside the state, calling on the Assembly to explore alternative solutions to the crisis.
“Rivers State issued a notice of impeachment on Governor Fubara and his Deputy. We appeal to our fellow colleagues to temper justice with mercy and see how we can solve this matter without the impeachment proceedings,” they said.
They added: “Having listened to so many calls from our elders and leaders, we are begging our colleagues to reconsider and see how this matter can be resolved amicably, even though the governor and his deputy have infringed on the Constitution.”
The move is being seen as a potential turning point in the Rivers State political crisis, as Fubara seeks backing from party hierarchy to stabilize governance and prevent escalation.
