Ukanafun Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State has received its first fully functional general hospital since the creation of the council in 1976, following the commissioning of the Ikot Akpankuk General Hospital and the approval for the installation of an MRI machine and dialysis units by Governor Umo Eno.
The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Akwa Ibom State chapter, has commended the development, describing the intervention as a major step towards expanding access to advanced diagnostic services and strengthening healthcare delivery in the area.
In a statement issued in Uyo on Monday, the chairman of the association, Dr Aniekan Peter, said residents of Ukanafun had for decades travelled long distances for routine and emergency medical care due to the absence of a functional hospital in the locality.
“The Nigerian Medical Association, Akwa Ibom State Branch, expresses sincere appreciation to His Excellency, Pastor Umo Eno, Governor of Akwa Ibom State, for commissioning the General Hospital at Ikot Akpankuk in Ukanafun and for approving the installation of an MRI machine and dialysis units in the facility,” the statement read.

He noted that the upgrade would significantly improve diagnostic capacity, enhance kidney care services and deliver better outcomes for patients within the community.
“This intervention brings real relief to the people of Ukanafun who, for many years, lacked a functional general hospital and had to travel far for routine and emergency care. With these upgrades, the community will now have access to advanced diagnostic services and kidney care within their locality,” he added.
Peter also applauded Governor Eno for demonstrating commitment to equity in healthcare delivery across the state, saying the development reflects his administration’s focus on building a more accessible and people-oriented health system.
“Your actions reflect a clear commitment to equitable healthcare and the well-being of our people. NMA AKS, under the leadership of Dr Aniekan Peter, stands with you as you continue to build a stronger and healthier Akwa Ibom,” the statement said.
The NMA chairman further acknowledged the role of the state Commissioner for Health, Prof Ekem John, whom he credited for supporting the governor’s vision and contributing to the stability and growth of the health sector in the state.
