The Physically Challenged Association in Bauchi State has raised concern over the persistent stigmatisation faced by polio survivors, saying the situation continues to hinder their participation in social and economic activities.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Chairman of the association, Muktar Umar, stated this in an interview on Thursday in Bauchi, where he appealed for greater inclusion of persons with disabilities in government and development programmes.
Umar lamented that despite various efforts to promote equality and inclusion, many polio survivors still face discrimination in public places, making it difficult for them to live dignified lives and access essential services.

“Polio survivors are often left behind in development programmes. The way people interact with us discourages many members from seeking care, leaving them vulnerable in spite of their education and training,” Umar said.
He explained that several members of the association possess educational and vocational qualifications but remain unemployed due to neglect and lack of institutional support from both public and private sectors.
Umar also recalled that under former governor Isa Yuguda’s administration, some members received vocational training in different trades, but inadequate funding hindered efforts to expand their small businesses.
Highlighting their commitment to public health, Umar said polio survivors have become strong advocates of routine immunisation, ensuring that children receive vaccinations to prevent the recurrence of the disease.
“We make sure our children don’t suffer what we endured. Some of us even crawl to health centres to ensure they are vaccinated. Immunisation remains our top priority,” he added.
He commended efforts by the education sector to integrate children with disabilities into mainstream schools and called on government agencies, development partners, and civil society organisations to support empowerment initiatives for polio survivors.
