President Bola Tinubu has introduced a subsidy on kidney dialysis, slashing the cost per session from N50,000 to just N12,000 in a move expected to ease the financial strain on thousands of Nigerians battling kidney disease.
The initiative, anchored in the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda (RHA), has already taken effect in several federal health facilities across the six geopolitical zones, including the Federal Medical Centres in Ebute-Metta (Lagos), Jabi (Abuja), Owerri, Abeokuta and Azare, as well as the University College Hospital, Ibadan.

Other health facilities include Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH); University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH); University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH); and University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH).
Tinubu assures broader access nationwide
According to a statement from the presidency, additional teaching hospitals and federal medical centres will be enrolled in the scheme before the end of the year to guarantee broader access nationwide.
This latest healthcare subsidy follows last year’s approval of free caesarean sections for pregnant women at federal hospitals.
The government says these combined measures underscore its commitment to improving public health and ensuring that financial barriers do not prevent citizens from receiving necessary medical care.
