President Bola Tinubu has reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening its economic and aviation ties with the United Kingdom, as British Airways celebrates 90 years of operations in the country.
The President gave the assurance on Wednesday while receiving a delegation from British Airways, led by the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Dr Richard Montgomery, and the airline’s Commercial Officer, Mr Colm Lacy, at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
In a statement by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu said Nigeria values its long-standing relationship with the United Kingdom and is ready to deepen cooperation for mutual growth.

He said the partnership between both countries has created opportunities in trade, investment, and people-to-people connections over the years.
He stated, “It is a very great joy… The transformation and strengthening of our relationship over the past 90 years is a milestone worthy of celebration.”
Tinubu noted that Nigeria is currently implementing reforms across its aviation sector and the wider economy to meet global standards and attract more investment.
He also said his administration had taken steps to resolve long-standing issues affecting foreign airlines, including clearing outstanding financial obligations.
The President said, “You’ve seen that since I assumed office, the outstanding liabilities… are being resolved by the Central Bank of Nigeria.”
The President added that Nigeria would continue to support partnerships that promote trade, connectivity, and economic growth.
Speaking at the meeting, British Airways Commercial Officer, Colm Lacy, said the airline’s relationship with Nigeria dates back to 1936 and has supported generations of Nigerians.
He said the airline connects Nigerian travellers to the United Kingdom and other parts of the world, helping to drive business and educational opportunities.
He said, “Nigeria is not simply a destination but a long-standing, most valued market.”
Lacy also commended the Federal Government and aviation authorities for improving safety and professionalism in the sector.
The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, said British Airways has introduced new aircraft on its Nigeria routes and is complying with policies to support local businesses, including serving Nigerian meals on outbound flights.
Also speaking, the British High Commissioner, Richard Montgomery, said the United Kingdom remains committed to strengthening its relationship with Nigeria.
He added that recent engagements between both countries had led to key investment agreements, including plans to support the rehabilitation of Lagos ports.
Tbhe meeting highlighted ongoing efforts by both countries to expand cooperation in aviation, trade, and infrastructure as British Airways marks nine decades of operations in Nigeria.
