Pep Guardiola has suggested he is likely to remain in charge of Manchester City next season, offering his clearest indication yet that he intends to continue at the club despite speculation about his future.
The Spaniard, who has been widely regarded as one of the most successful managers in modern football, is currently under contract with the Premier League champions until 2027. However, reports in recent months have suggested that the ongoing campaign could be his final season at the Etihad Stadium.
Speaking ahead of City’s upcoming FA Cup fixture against Newcastle United, Guardiola indicated that he is already looking ahead to improvements that could make the team stronger next season.
According to the City manager, the squad still has areas that need significant improvement, particularly in defence, if they are to compete consistently at the highest level.
“We have to defend better in some departments,” Guardiola said.
“Still, still, still, still we are not a complete team to compete, to be solid – that is the reality.”
Guardiola acknowledged that the team is currently undergoing a period of transition, with tactical adjustments and squad changes forming part of a broader rebuilding process.
“We are in the process of many changes,” he added.
“We can learn quicker to make sure nothing is lost, to arrive in the last months with chances to win something.”
His remarks suggest a long-term focus rather than an imminent departure, as he expressed strong confidence that the team will improve significantly in the next campaign.
“But I’m pretty sure next season we’ll be better. I have no doubts about that,” Guardiola said.
Guardiola has enjoyed a highly successful tenure at Manchester City since taking charge in 2016, guiding the club to numerous domestic titles and European success. His future has been the subject of constant speculation, given his reputation for stepping away from clubs after extended periods.
City remain in contention for silverware this season, with their FA Cup clash against Newcastle United representing another opportunity to add to their trophy haul.
For now, Guardiola’s comments suggest that the Catalan coach is focused on continuing his project at the club and building a stronger squad for the coming seasons.
