Daniele De Rossi’s Roma tenure is over. The former Italy midfielder was sacked by the club earlier today after four Serie A games this season. The 41-year-old coach has been overseeing Giallorossi since January when he was appointed to replace Portuguese coach Jose Mourinho. He steered Roma to a sixth place finish in the Serie A and the semifinal of the Europa League where they lost to Xabi Alonso’s invincible Bayer Leverkusen.
De Rossi’s impressive exploits with Roma last season earned him a contract extension through 2027. However, this season started on a really underwhelming note for the Giallorossi who have picked up only three points from four Serie A games and scored only two goals this season. This informed the decision of the club to part ways with De Rossi who faithfully spent his entire playing career with them.
A statement from the club reads, “The club’s decision is made in the best interest of the team, to get back on the desired path as soon as possible wen the season is still in its early stages.” The club then went on to appreciate De Rossi’s contribution to the club. They wrote, “A heartfelt thank you to Daniele, who will always be at home at the Giallorossi club, for the work he has done in recent months with passion and dedication.”
The club has not announced any replacement ahead of their Europa League game against Athletic Bilbao.
De Rossi played in 616 games for Roma from 2001 to 2019.
