The South-West Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Kamorudeen Ajisafe, has expressed confidence that the party will secure significant victories in the 2027 general elections, both in the region and nationwide.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, Ajisafe said the PDP would overcome its ongoing internal crisis and reclaim its position as a dominant political force in Nigeria. His remarks come at a time when the party has been grappling with deep divisions that have weakened its influence since the 2023 elections.
The crisis within the PDP has seen the emergence of rival factions led by prominent figures, including the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and a bloc aligned with Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde alongside Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed.
Both factions have reportedly organised separate conventions and produced parallel National Working Committee members, further complicating efforts to unify the party’s leadership structure.
Despite these challenges, Ajisafe insisted that reconciliation efforts by party stakeholders were already underway and would soon yield results. He maintained that these “consolidated efforts” would prevent aspirants from being sidelined and position the party for electoral success.
“I will continue to say that those expecting PDP to die will be disappointed,” Ajisafe said, expressing certainty that the crisis would soon be resolved and followed by a strong political resurgence.
He pointed to the performance of Governor Makinde in Oyo State as evidence of the party’s continued relevance, highlighting infrastructure projects and governance initiatives that have boosted the administration’s popularity.
Ajisafe argued that Makinde’s achievements, combined with his support among residents and traditional rulers, would make it difficult for opposition parties to unseat the PDP in the state. He also warned against any attempts to politicise or undermine traditional institutions in the region.
Looking beyond Oyo State, Ajisafe expressed optimism about the party’s prospects in Ekiti and other states, noting that the PDP has credible candidates and a strong grassroots presence across the country.
He concluded that the party is well-positioned to surprise critics in 2027, insisting that it retains the structure and support base needed to secure major electoral victories.
