Hon. Engr. Sagir Ibrahim Koki, Deputy Chairman of the House Committee on Petroleum Resources and Member representing Kano Municipal Federal Constituency, has formally resigned from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), citing deep-seated leadership crises within the party.
In a resignation letter dated 11 November 2025, and addressed to the NNPP Chairperson of Zaitawa Ward, Koki said the ongoing internal conflicts at the national level had made it increasingly difficult for him to effectively represent his constituents in the House of Representatives.
“I have taken this decision because the internal crisis in the party leadership at the centre has made it difficult, if not impossible, for me to continue discharging my duties and provide my people with the desired representation in the House of Representatives,” he wrote.
The lawmaker expressed appreciation to the NNPP for giving him the opportunity to serve, describing his time in the party as an “invaluable experience.”
Koki also stated that his resignation was in line with Section 40 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, as well as the party’s own constitutional provisions that guarantee freedom of association.
His departure marks another high-profile exit from the NNPP in Kano State, coming just two days after Hon. Abdulmumin Jibrin Kofa, who represents the Kiru/Bebeji Federal Constituency, defected from the NNPP to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Political observers say Koki’s resignation underscores widening cracks within the NNPP following months of internal disputes over party leadership, strategy, and the control of key structures in its northern stronghold.
As of Wednesday, the NNPP had yet to issue an official statement regarding Koki’s resignation or comment on growing defections from its ranks.
