The British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Dr Richard Montgomery, has concluded a two-day working visit to Anambra State, as part of the United Kingdom’s engagement with Nigeria’s democratic process ahead of the state’s forthcoming gubernatorial election.
The visit, which comes just weeks before the 8 November poll, included meetings with key political and security stakeholders to assess the state’s readiness for the election.
According to a statement from the British High Commission in Abuja on Thursday, Montgomery met with Governor Charles Soludo, leading gubernatorial candidates, the Resident Electoral Commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the state Commissioner of Police, and representatives of civil society organisations.
Discussions during the visit focused on technical and logistical preparations for the election, particularly around securing the state’s 5,720 polling units, improving voter turnout, and ensuring a peaceful atmosphere across Anambra’s 21 local government areas.

“Our focus is solely on the electoral process itself – that it should be transparent, peaceful, inclusive, and enjoy the confidence of the Anambra people,” Montgomery stated.
He stressed that the UK does not endorse any political party or candidate, but is committed to supporting the integrity of Nigeria’s democratic processes.
“I encourage all eligible voters to exercise their democratic rights and to engage peacefully in the election,” he added.
The High Commissioner reiterated the UK’s commitment to working with Nigeria to strengthen democratic institutions, promote accountability, and support good governance.
The Anambra gubernatorial election is being closely watched, with heightened interest in voter participation and security arrangements. The UK’s engagement underscores the international community’s support for a credible and violence-free electoral process.
Montgomery’s visit is part of the UK’s broader diplomatic efforts to promote democracy, peace, and stability across Nigeria, particularly during major electoral cycles.
