Senator Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, former Governor of Sokoto State and a key figure in the African Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition, has accused President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration of actively destabilising opposition parties in Nigeria ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking on Channels Television’s “Politics Today” on Friday, Tambuwal stated that the signs of government interference in opposition politics are evident, alleging that the Tinubu-led government is engaged in coordinated efforts to weaken rival platforms.
“We are all sensible, and when you look at what is happening in various political parties in Nigeria today, you don’t need to be told. The amount of denial they give, including Tinubu, shows they are involved in efforts aimed at destabilising the opposition,” Tambuwal said.
While addressing a reported police invitation, Tambuwal stated he has no issue honouring law enforcement, but cautioned against political misuse of state institutions.
“If I’m invited by the police, I will appear. The interpretation and reading of meaning into the invitation is a totally different ball game. The police need to be very circumspect going forward,” he warned.

Tinubu cannot win against united opposition – Tambuwal
In a bold political projection, the Sokoto South Senator declared that President Tinubu would struggle to win re-election if major opposition figures — former President Goodluck Jonathan, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, and Rabiu Kwankwaso — were to form a united political front.
“It will be easier for the opposition to form an alliance to defeat Tinubu. But if Tinubu, Jonathan, Atiku, Peter Obi, and Kwankwaso run in the same election, it would be difficult for Tinubu to win,” Tambuwal said.
He suggested that the political dynamics of such a scenario would fundamentally shift voter behaviour across the country.
“When this happens, the dynamics will be different, and a lot of things will change the way people will vote,” he added.
When asked about his preferred presidential candidate for 2027, Tambuwal declined to endorse any individual at this time.
“When they all declare openly, then I will come back and tell you my choice,” he said.
