Afrobeat star Seun Kuti backs Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan in her sexual harassment claims against Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
Kuti criticized Nigerian celebrities and feminists for remaining silent on the matter.
Allegations against senate president
Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, who represents Kogi Central, accused Akpabio of rejecting her motion on the Ajaokuta Steel Complex because she refused his alleged sexual advances. She made the claims during a televised interview, sparking controversy.
Since her statement, she has faced harsh criticism, particularly from female colleagues in the Senate. Many have dismissed her claims, while others have remained silent. Despite the seriousness of the allegation, there has been little public outcry.
Kuti calls out celebrities and activists
During a live session on Instagram, Seun Kuti voiced his strong support for Akpoti-Uduaghan. He expressed disappointment in Nigerian celebrities and women’s rights activists for not rallying behind her. He compared their silence to their vocal support for Annie Idibia during her marital issues with singer 2Baba (2Face Idibia).
Kuti said, “I stand 100 percent with Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan. She isn’t even the first to accuse the Senate President of such actions. It’s shocking that these so-called women’s rights activists are silent.”
He went further, pointing out that many celebrities were quick to comment on Burna Boy’s alleged unfulfilled promise to model Sophia Egbueje but ignored serious political and social issues.
“They talk about Burna Boy and Sophia Egbueje, but when it comes to serious matters, they remain silent,” Kuti said.

Government influence over celebrities
The musician accused Nollywood actors and actresses of being unwilling to challenge the government. He suggested that many entertainers benefit from fraudulent government grants, making them reluctant to speak against political leaders.
“Many celebrities, especially Nollywood stars, benefit from the government through shady grants. They won’t dare to speak out,” Kuti alleged.
He acknowledged that he could not personally organize protests for Akpoti-Uduaghan, but he urged Nigerian women to stand with her.
“I can’t openly protest, but I call on Nigerian women to support her,” he stated.
Public reactions and ongoing controversy
Kuti’s remarks have stirred conversations online. Some Nigerians praise him for standing with Akpoti-Uduaghan, while others criticize him for attacking celebrities. The Senate President has yet to respond directly to the accusations, and no official investigation has been launched.
Meanwhile, Akpoti-Uduaghan remains under pressure. Critics argue that her allegations are politically motivated, while supporters insist that she deserves a fair hearing.
As the debate continues, many Nigerians are watching closely to see if the allegations will lead to further scrutiny of sexual harassment in political circles.
