Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has expressed deep sorrow and solidarity with the Catholic community across the state in light of the recent passing of Monsignor Thomas Oleghe, who holds the title of the oldest Catholic priest in Nigeria.
Monsignor Oleghe breathed his last at the remarkable age of 104 years on the morning of Sunday, November 24, 2024. In an official press statement released on Monday by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua, Senator Okpebholo reflected on the profound legacy left behind by Fr. Oleghe, describing his exemplary life as a powerful lesson for all Nigerians.

He stated, “Fr. Oleghe originated from the Igiode town in Agenebode, located in the Etsako East Local Government Area of Edo State. Although he lived a fulfilled life and reached the extraordinary milestone of 104 years, we will dearly miss his fatherly presence and the countless lives he impacted throughout his years.”
The governor also conveyed his condolences on behalf of the people of Edo State, expressing profound respect for the late priest’s contributions to the community and the church. “On behalf of the people and Government of Edo State, I wish to extend my deepest condolences to the family of the late Fr. Oleghe and the Catholic Church Community in Nigeria, particularly the Auchi Diocese. May God grant his soul eternal rest, amen,” the governor concluded.
In a related statement issued on Sunday, the Bishop of Auchi, Gabriel Dunia, announced the sad news of Monsignor Oleghe’s passing, confirming that he departed this world at approximately 2:30 AM.
The bishop stated, “With gratitude to God for a life well-lived on earth, I hereby inform you of the passage of the Rt. Rev. Monsignor Thomas Oleghe, the oldest Catholic priest in Nigeria, departed to the Great Beyond at about 2:30 AM this morning on the 24th of November,2024.”
The bishop’s announcement further revealed that Monsignor Oleghe would be laid to rest on Wednesday, following appropriate memorial tributes from the community and church. Monsignor Thomas Oleghe’s extraordinary life and service have made him an enduring figure within the Catholic Church, not just in the state of Edo but throughout Nigeria.
