Governor Hyacinth Alia of Benue State has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to restoring lasting peace in the troubled Sankera axis, a region that has witnessed repeated security challenges in recent years.
The governor gave the assurance during a stopover at the Ukum Local Government Secretariat while en route to Wukari in Taraba State for a peace meeting.
Alia disclosed that his administration is working closely with the Federal Government to strengthen security operations in Sankera and other affected communities across the state. As part of efforts to curb terrorism, kidnapping and banditry, he revealed plans to establish a tactical operations base of the Nigerian Army in the area to enable rapid response and intelligence-led operations.
He appealed to individuals involved in criminal activities to lay down their arms and embrace peace, while urging security agencies to intensify patrols in high-risk communities.
The governor acknowledged the Tor Sankera and the Ter Ukum for expressing regret over the circumstances surrounding his earlier visit to Ukum following the coordinated attacks on Ukum and Logo Local Government Areas in April 2025. He described the gesture as a demonstration of unity and called on residents to support ongoing peace-building initiatives.
Beyond security, Alia assured residents that work would soon commence on previously approved road projects in the area. He also pledged the immediate reconstruction of the Ukum Local Government Secretariat, which was recently destroyed by fire.
During the visit, the governor commissioned a temporary office complex constructed by the Chairman of Ukum LGA, Hon. Jonathan Modi.
Former Benue State Governor Gabriel Suswam commended Alia’s strategy in addressing insecurity and urged citizens to continue supporting the administration. He also highlighted the appointment of a Vice Chancellor from Sankera to Father Adasu University, Makurdi, describing it as a positive development for the region.
Hon. Prince Solomon Wombo, representing Katsina-Ala/Ukum/Logo Federal Constituency, and other stakeholders pledged their support for the state government’s efforts to restore stability and development in Sankera.
