Liverpool right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold has insisted the details of his contract extension negotiations with Liverpool would remain private. Alexander-Arnold whose current deal with his boyhood club will expire in June however revealed that winning trophies is a major consideration for him in deciding his future. The Liverpool vice-captain has been with the club for 20 years, but fans are now worried he may be lured away from the club on a free transfer if he does not renew his deal.
The fears are valid considering the interest in the defender from Real Madrid. The Spanish club has on its roster Alexander-Arnold’s England teammate Jude Bellingham. French superstar Kylian Mbappe also joined the club on a free transfer from PSG last summer. However, Reds fans may be counting on Alexander-Arnold’s sentimental attachments to Liverpool, including his dream to become the club’s captain. The right-back said, “I want to captain this club, that’s a goal of mine. Whether that happens is out of my hands, to be honest.”
However, the 25-year-old maintains that winning trophies is a priority for him. He said, “The most important thing is trophies if I’m honest. I’m a player who’s highly motivated by trophies and winning things and being elite.” As a part of the successful Liverpool side that won everything under Jurgen Klopp, Alexander-Arnold is a proven winner. He also believes that the Reds are in contention for trophies this season under new manager Arne Slot. He said, “Signs are there this season. We’re looking really good, it’s still early days, but we need to have a lot of consistency and beat a lot of teams over the course of the season. Then we’ve got the other cups and the Champions League. It’ll be difficult, but you know, we’re looking to win as many trophies as we can.”
Liverpool currently sit second on the Premier League table and opened their Champions 5 campaign with a 3-1 victory over Milan at the San Siro.
