The presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Prince Adewole Adebayo, has accused President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of attempting to dominate not only the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) but also opposition political parties ahead of the 2027 general election.
Adebayo made the allegation in a statement issued on Friday through his spokesperson, Alabi Alayande, warning that what he described as the President’s growing interference in opposition parties poses a serious threat to Nigeria’s democratic system.
According to the SDP flag bearer, President Tinubu appears determined to exert influence across major political platforms despite already securing control of the APC.
“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is not satisfied to be the presidential candidate of the APC,” Adebayo stated. “No. Bola Ahmed Tinubu wants to be the presidential candidate of the APC, PDP, Labour, and SDP.”
The former presidential candidate alleged that such political dominance, if unchecked, could weaken opposition parties and undermine democratic competition in the country.
He therefore urged Nigerians to resist what he termed “anti-democratic tendencies” through the ballot box during the 2027 presidential election.
Adebayo also criticised Nigerian politicians for what he described as an excessive obsession with political power and personal enrichment at a time when many citizens continue to struggle with economic hardship, rising inflation and insecurity.
“The greed for money has been detected. But the greed for the soul of the country — that’s one we cannot allow,” he said.
The SDP candidate reaffirmed his party’s readiness to challenge the ruling APC in the next presidential election, expressing confidence in the party’s ability to offer Nigerians an alternative leadership platform.
“That is why we in the SDP are going to contest the presidential election taking place in January 2027 with me as your flag bearer,” he added.
