Chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has announced that remittances from Nigerians living abroad have exceeded $90 billion in the past five years.
During her budget defence before the National Assembly Joint Committee on Diaspora on Thursday, January 16, she revealed that in December 2024 alone, remittances amounted to at least N60 billion, highlighting the vital role of the diaspora in Nigeria’s development.
Dabiri-Erewa praised the diaspora as a powerful resource and emphasized their growing significance as ambassadors of the country, stating that Nigerians abroad have the potential to change the global narrative about Nigeria.
She also urged Nigerians abroad to work on improving the country’s image globally, noting that many people worldwide now want to be friends with Nigerians.
The NiDCOM Chairman further outlined that remittances from the diaspora are projected to continue growing, noting that this impact is just beginning to be fully realised.
She also acknowledged President Bola Tinubu’s efforts in implementing reforms aimed at improving Nigeria’s security and infrastructure.
Dabiri-Erewa added that discussions with diaspora Nigerians regarding business and human development have revealed an eagerness to invest in Nigeria, particularly in sectors such as digital technology.
She mentioned that one of the most impressive initiatives underway involves training young people in digital skills, which is expected to open up future opportunities for Nigerians both home and abroad.
Senator Victor Umeh, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Diaspora, suggested that diaspora voting be postponed until Nigeria’s election processes are more organised and accurate data on Nigerians abroad is captured.
He emphasised the importance of first ensuring reliable elections within Nigeria before considering the inclusion of diaspora voting. Umeh also promised that the National Assembly would provide more funding for NiDCOM to strengthen its efforts in supporting Nigerians abroad.
