In its bid to ensure the availability of safe blood throughout the country, the Armed Forces Blood Centre (AFBC) has urged government institutions, corporations, NGOs and other partners to do more in supporting initiatives on voluntary blood donations.
This request came from the Acting Director of the AFBC, Major A.J. Adankala, in the concluding session of the 2026 World Blood Donor Day celebration in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

According to him, the availability of safe blood and blood products is still largely determined by individuals who voluntarily and consistently donate their blood despite advances in medicine, testing and blood safety services.
Adankala said that the theme of this year’s World Blood Donor Day, “One Drop of Humanity: Give Blood, Save Lives” highlights the need for solidarity and humanity in ensuring that the nation’s needs for blood supply are met.
The Acting Director congratulated all voluntary blood donors for their humanitarian gesture which is saving the lives and improving the health of thousands of people.

The guest speaker further noted that reinforcing the activities of the national blood program would be instrumental in ensuring that safe blood and blood products are available to everyone in need.
Adankala encouraged all partners in the campaign to raise more awareness on the issue and give more opportunities to Nigerians for voluntary blood donation as a way of ensuring that there exists an efficient blood system which is very important in health care provision.
Attendees of the event equally reiterated their appeal for joint efforts aimed at increasing voluntary blood donation in the country as well as reaffirming their commitment to blood safety campaigns in Nigeria.
The event witnessed the award of certificates and souvenirs to voluntary blood donors and distinguished guests.
