President Bola Tinubu has approved a final six-month extension to the tenure of the Comptroller General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Adewale Adeniyi, to allow for the smooth implementation of key reforms and an orderly leadership transition.
The extension, which takes effect from 1 August 2026, will run until February 2027. Adeniyi’s initial tenure extension had been due to conclude on that date.

According to a statement issued on Friday by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the additional period will enable the Comptroller General to consolidate the National Single Window project while ensuring a seamless succession process within the service.
During the transition, Adeniyi, in collaboration with the NCS Board, will oversee the promotion of eligible officers to the rank of Comptroller of Customs.
He will also facilitate the compulsory retirement of personnel who have reached 60 years of age or completed 35 years of service, in line with public service rules.
Adeniyi, who joined the Nigeria Customs Service after graduating from Obafemi Awolowo University in the late 1980s, has enjoyed a distinguished career spanning several decades.
He was promoted to Deputy Comptroller in 2012, attained the rank of Comptroller in 2017, and rose to Assistant Comptroller General in 2020.

In January 2023, he served as Acting Deputy Comptroller General before President Tinubu appointed him Comptroller General in June 2023.
The announcement underscores the administration’s commitment to continuity in critical government agencies while prioritising institutional reforms aimed at enhancing trade facilitation, revenue generation, and operational efficiency at Nigeria’s borders.
The National Single Window project is expected to significantly reduce bureaucracy and improve the ease of doing business through digital integration of customs processes.
The development comes as the federal government continues to strengthen revenue-generating institutions amid economic challenges.
