Former Labour Party presidential flagbearer in the 2023 presidential election, Peter Obi, has again indicated his intention to run for president in 2027, linking his ambition to ongoing local elections in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Obi made the remarks while campaigning for the African Democratic Congress (ADC) candidate in the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) election, telling supporters that their backing at the grassroots level is central to his broader political plans.
“You see this coming election, support us in AMAC; it will help me. Your support in AMAC is critical to our journey. I am involved and contesting the coming election as number one. When I come back, you will see. I assure you,” he said.
Since Obi aligned with the ADC, many of his loyalists—particularly members of the Obidient movement—have been pressing the party to position him as its presidential candidate ahead of 2027.
But the ADC’s spokesperson, Bolaji Abdullahi, has urged restraint among supporters, warning against divisive language and stressing the importance of party cohesion.
Speculation has also intensified around possible political alliances, with some ADC stakeholders reportedly considering a joint ticket featuring Obi and former Kano governor Rabiu Kwankwaso. Kwankwaso’s continued distance from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has further fueled talk of a potential partnership.
Meanwhile, allies of former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar have revived appeals for Obi to accept a vice-presidential slot, similar to arrangements discussed ahead of the 2019 election.
Obi, however, has rejected such calls, reaffirming to supporters that his focus is on contesting the presidency as a principal candidate. He again appealed for support for his preferred ADC contender in the AMAC election, describing it as “crucial to his political journey”.
Since openly signalling his 2027 ambition, Obi has repeatedly pledged that, if elected, he would serve only a single four-year term, insisting he would not spend “a day beyond four years in office”.
