The British Transport Police secured a six-year prison sentence for Daniel Odubanjo, a 27-year-old Nigerian man living in the United Kingdom, after he sexually assaulted a woman on a train. According to a statement from the BTP website reported by PUNCH Metro, Chelmsford Crown Court handed down the sentence on Monday, January 12, 2026. Odubanjo was convicted of one count of false imprisonment and two counts of sexual assault following a trial.
The offences stemmed from incidents on November 29, 2024, aboard a train travelling from Shenfield to Chelmsford in Essex. A 21-year-old woman was using the onboard toilet when she heard repeated banging on the door and assumed another passenger was waiting. Upon opening it, she faced Odubanjo, who forced her back inside the cubicle, locked the door, grabbed her wrists, and began sexually assaulting her. During the struggle, she managed to open the door briefly and tried to alert a fellow passenger, but Odubanjo pulled her back in and continued the assault while she screamed for help. He only stopped and released her after she falsely claimed to be 14 years old. Distraught, she then approached train staff, left the train at Chelmsford, and reported the matter to British Transport Police.

Moments later, Odubanjo targeted a 17-year-old girl on the same service. He sat opposite her, bombarded her with inappropriate questions, and exposed himself. When he stepped away briefly, she moved closer to other passengers and told them what occurred. Upon his return, he sat next to her and sexually assaulted her, but a nearby passenger intervened and pulled him off. Officers from the British Transport Police met the train at Hatfield Peverel station, just outside Chelmsford, and arrested him there.
After a full investigation, Odubanjo was charged and convicted. In addition to the six-year term, the court ordered him to pay a victim surcharge and imposed a Sexual Harm Prevention Order. This restricts him from being under the influence of alcohol or any substances while on public transport, at stations, or on Network Rail property.
Detective Sergeant Hayley Whyte of the BTP described the attacks as terrifying and vile, noting that Odubanjo preyed on a young woman and a teenage girl in quick succession, leaving both victims deeply distressed and traumatised. She praised their bravery, along with that of the intervening passenger, for ensuring justice was served through a substantial prison sentence.
