The Bayelsa State Police Command has described as false and misleading a circulated report claiming that four dead bodies of women were discovered in an uncompleted building in Akenfa, Yenagoa.
In a statement shared on Tuesday by the Command’s spokesperson, Musa Mohammed, the police said no death was recorded or reported at the Akenfa Police Station or any other part of the state metropolis.
The spokesperson explained that following a distress call received at about 1530 hours, operatives of the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) unit arrested a suspected male ritualist, Ogbe Joseph, over an alleged attempted ritual practice.
According to the statement, a yet-to-be-identified victim, aged 49, was found in the underground apartment of Joseph suspected to be a shrine. The victim was described as weak and drugged.
The statement added that the underground apartment is located within an uncompleted storey building in Akenfa Community, Yenagoa.
“The victim, who appeared drugged and weak, was rescued alive and immediately rushed to the hospital, where he is currently receiving medical attention, while investigation is ongoing,” the statement said.
To avoid creating an unconducive environment in society, the Commissioner of Police urged members of the public to seek information from reliable sources through the Command’s official social media platforms.
He further encouraged the public to refrain from spreading unverified and misleading information.
The Command reiterated its commitment to the protection of lives and property, while advising the public to report suspicious movements to the nearest police station or contact the Command Control Room via the following phone lines: 07034578208 or 09167322691.
