Former chief constable of West Midlands Police, Craig Guildford, has been directed to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC).
Guildford retired on Friday after the Home Secretary, Shabana Mahmood, said she no longer had confidence in him following the decision to ban Maccabi Tel Aviv fans from attending a match against Aston Villa.
The West Midlands Police and Crime Commissioner, Simon Foster referred him to the IOPC for a misconduct investigation.
Foster in a statement released addressed the controversy regarding the Maccabi Tel Aviv ban saying: “These matters have had a significant impact on public confidence, and the confidence of particular communities in the West Midlands. This is unacceptable.”

“The force knows that I expect them to comply with the very highest standards of conduct at all times.
“I will therefore today make a voluntary referral to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) regarding any conduct matters by the former Chief Constable in relation to these events.”
He reaffirmed his commitment to holding the force accountable for its actions following the ban.
“I acknowledge the continuing and understandable public interest. I will continue to hold West Midlands Police to account,” he said.
“That is absolute, unconditional and non-negotiable.”
