The Lagos State Government has announced the cancellation of the much-anticipated #GreaterLagosCountdown for 2025/2026, urging residents to swap the usual high-energy celebrations for a period of sober reflection and prayer.
The announcement, made on Thursday, by the Commissioner for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Toke Benson-Awoyinka, comes as a surprise after earlier reports indicated that the 10th-anniversary edition themed “Legends of Afrobeats” was set to hold across six locations.
Instead of the fireworks and concerts typically held at venues like the Agege Stadium and Tafawa Balewa Square, the state government is encouraging Lagosians to focus on personal and communal milestones.

“The end of the year provides an important opportunity for Lagosians to pause, take stock of personal and communal achievements, and renew their commitment to peace, unity, and shared prosperity,” Benson-Awoyinka stated.
The Commissioner urged residents to use this time to prioritize home-centered celebrations, foster peace within local communities and prepare spiritually for the opportunities of the new year.
While the statement did not provide a specific reason for the last-minute cancellation, it emphasised the values of “responsibility, compassion, and resilience” that define the state.
Reports suggest the decision aligns with a broader governmental push to prioritize public safety and encourage a more reflective transition into 2026.
Despite the halt of the physical event, the Commissioner expressed deep appreciation for the stakeholders, partners, and the creative community who have made the Greater Lagos Countdown a cultural icon over the last decade.
