The Rivers State Police Command has announced an expanded security operation ahead of the Yuletide season, working closely with other security agencies to ensure peace, safety and public order throughout the state.
In a statement issued on Sunday by the command’s spokesperson, residents were urged to embrace the festive period as a time for reflection and prayers for the continued peace and development of Rivers State and Nigeria at large.
The statement said the Commissioner of Police, CP Olugbenga Adepoju, had approved a comprehensive security arrangement involving the deployment of tactical units to key locations across the state. These include waterways entry and exit points, motor parks, hotels, recreational centres, churches, mosques and other identified flashpoints.
“This deployment is designed to provide visibility Policing, enhance surveillance, and facilitate rapid response to potential security breaches,” the statement noted.
It added that the police boss had instructed Area Commanders and Divisional Police Officers (DPOs) to fully utilise all available operational and intelligence resources within their jurisdictions to guarantee a smooth and incident-free celebration.
“The CP has further directed all the Area Commanders and Divisional Police Officers (DPOs) to deploy both operational and intelligence assets at their disposal to effectively Police their Areas of responsibility to ensure a hitch-free celebration.”
According to the command, community engagement is also being strengthened through partnerships with traditional rulers, youth groups and religious leaders, aimed at building trust and encouraging timely information sharing to prevent security threats during the festive period.
“The Command is intensifying community engagement through collaborative efforts with traditional rulers, youth organisations, and religious leaders to foster a culture of trust, promote public confidence, and encourage early intelligence sharing. This proactive approach aims to nip potential security threats in the bud and prevent incidents during the festive period.”
The police further cautioned parents to closely monitor their children and discourage the use of fireworks and the practice of knockout shooting, warning that such activities pose serious risks to public safety.
“In light of the festivities, parents are advised to exercise vigilance and caution their children against engaging in pyrotechnics (fireworks) and knockout shooting, which poses risks.”
Reaffirming its commitment to protecting lives and property, the command urged residents to secure their homes, stay alert, promptly report suspicious activities and avoid spreading unverified information that could cause panic.
“The Police Command reaffirms its commitment to safeguarding the lives and property of all citizens before, during and after the Christmas celebration, urging residents to secure their homes by ensuring that all doors and windows are properly fastened before retiring for the night, remain vigilant, report suspicious activities to the nearest station, and refrain from disseminating unverified information that could cause unnecessary alarm.”
Residents were advised to report emergencies or concerns at the nearest police station or through the command’s emergency lines: Control Room – 08032003514 and CRU – 08120822987.
