The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), in partnership with the Government of Guinea-Bissau, has launched Phase II of its Assistive Device Programme for Children with Disabilities (CWD), reinforcing its commitment to inclusive development across the region.
Held in Bissau, the launch ceremony was led by Guinea-Bissau’s Minister of Women, Family and Social Solidarity, H.E. Maria Inácia Có Mendes Sanhá.
She hailed the programme as a testament to dignity and inclusion, stating that such initiatives affirm the worth of every child, regardless of ability.
“ It is about telling our children that they matter, that their rightful place in society is non-negotiable,” the Minister said, calling for stronger collaboration and national ownership of disability rights.

Dr. Alves D’Almada, Head of Social Affairs Division at ECOWAS, reiterated the regional bloc’s dedication to equity and social justice.
He described the programme as a tool to uplift families, reinforce institutions and promote human dignity.
Also speaking, Mr. João Pedro Cabral of the National Federation of Associations for the Defence and Promotion of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, urged governments to embed disability into public policy and applauded the initiative’s focus on community engagement.
The event drew stakeholders from government ministries, civil society, and local experts.
It also featured consultations, field visits and strategy sessions aimed at ensuring cultural relevance and long-term sustainability.
The initiative aligns with ECOWAS Vision 2050 and its 4×4 Strategic Objectives, positioning disability inclusion as central to regional integration.
