Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou has defended James Maddison’s decision to attend the World Darts Championship shortly after being deemed too unwell to start a Premier League match.
Maddison, who began Sunday’s 2-2 draw against Wolves on the bench due to illness, came on as a substitute in the 64th minute. Later that evening, the England midfielder was seen at Alexandra Palace with teammate Brennan Johnson, enjoying a tie between Luke Humphries and Peter Wright.
Postecoglou dismissed any concerns, stating: “I’ve got no problem with players having lives. Playing football and living life are two different things. If he were bedridden and missed the game, then went to the darts, that would be an issue—but that wasn’t the case.”
Maddison, a known darts enthusiast who celebrates goals with a dart-throwing gesture, has been instrumental for Spurs this season, with eight goals and five assists in 26 appearances.
Postecoglou emphasized the importance of managing Maddison’s fitness amid a congested fixture list: “Keeping Madders fit and sharp is crucial. He’s made a strong impact when he’s played, and we want him to keep doing so.”
The incident highlights Postecoglou’s pragmatic approach to player management, focusing on balance rather than unnecessary restrictions.
