The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has raised an alarm over the spread of fake messages and online scams aimed at defrauding members of the public.
In a press statement issued on Tuesday, the apex bank said it had observed a growing number of fraudulent emails, messages, and online communications falsely linked to the bank.
The statement, signed by the Acting Director of Corporate Communications (DCC), Hakama Sidi Ali, said the messages were designed to mislead people and gain access to their personal and financial information.

According to the bank, many of the messages ask recipients to click suspicious links and provide sensitive details, while also spreading false information about its leadership, licensing, and policies.
The statement read, “The Central Bank of Nigeria wishes to alert members of the public to the circulation of fraudulent messages… intended to misinform members of the public.”
The bank warned that such messages are not from official sources and should be ignored.
It advised Nigerians not to click on unknown links or share personal information on unverified platforms.
The bank also urged the public to confirm any information about its activities through its official website and recognised media outlets.
It said, “Members of the public are strongly advised to verify the authenticity of all CBN communications through the official website.”
In addition, the CBN called on individuals to report any suspicious message, email, or website to law enforcement agencies.
The bank reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the financial system and said it was working with relevant agencies to stren[gthen cybersecurity measures.
It added that efforts are ongoing to prevent digital fraud and ensure the safety of Nigerians using financial services.
The warning comes amid rising cases of cyber fraud and online scams across the country, with authorities urging the public to remain alert and cautious.
