The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has said that Nigeria’s military is underfunded, as it reported that only about 7 percent of the Nigerian Army’s 2025 budget for security equipment has been released across the country.
The ADC made this known on Tuesday in a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, noting that out of N336.76 billion approved for security equipment, only N16.71 billion had been released so far.
The party also said no funds had been released for key logistics such as transport, aircraft fuel, and military barracks.

The ADC said this development was troubling, especially at a time when the country faces serious security challenges.
It affirmed that the situation shows a gap between government statements on security and actual action.
The ADC said, “This is not just disturbing, it is indefensible. It is yet another example of a government that talks tough on security but fails to back it up with action.”
The party linked the funding issue to a recent report of mass abduction in Ngoshe, Borno State.
As maintained by the ADC, more than 400 women and children were abducted, and a ransom of N5 billion was demanded by Boko Haram.
The said abductors reportedly gave a 72-hour ultimatum and threatened to disperse the victims if the demand was not met.
The ADC said the situation shows the reality of insecurity in the country. It noted that terrorists now feel bold enough to issue threats to the government, while many citizens remain unprotected.
It explained that poor funding affects military operations. According to the party, when funds are not released for equipment and logistics, the military becomes weak.
The party said that delays in funding can limit mobility, reduce access to fuel, and slow down response to threats.
It also mentioned government spending priorities. It claimed that while the military faces funding challenges, the presidential air fleet has been fully funded.
The ADC said this creates the impression that comfort at the top is being placed above public safety.
The party said, “A government that releases only 7 percent of security equipment funds, and nothing for critical logistics, cannot claim to be serious about winning the war against terror.”
The ADC warned that the effects of underfunding are already visible.
It said many communities remain unsafe, farmers cannot return to their land, and businesses continue to operate in fear.
The party called on the federal government to treat security funding as urgent, suggesting that budget allocations must be followed by timely release of funds for equipment, logistics, training, and intelligence.
The ADC also expressed support for the families of those abducted and urged the government to act quickly to secure their release.
“The ADC stands with the families of those abducted and calls on the federal government to act with urgency, clarity, and resolve,” the party insisted.
