Troops of Operation FANSAN YANMA have successfully rescued the wife of late retired Major General Rabe Abubakar after a fierce gun battle with armed bandits in Matazu Local Government Area of Katsina State.
The rescue operation, which was conducted under the ongoing military offensive tagged Operation CLEAN SWEEP III, followed intelligence reports that led security forces to the location where the victim was being held by her captors.
Military sources disclosed that troops launched a coordinated search-and-rescue mission shortly after receiving actionable intelligence regarding the whereabouts of the abducted woman. The operation culminated in a violent confrontation with the armed criminals at Tunga village, where the kidnappers were reportedly hiding.
According to security sources familiar with the operation, troops engaged the bandits in a fierce exchange of gunfire, forcing the criminals to abandon their captive and flee into nearby forests under intense military pressure.
However, during the encounter, the victim sustained gunshot injuries allegedly inflicted by the fleeing bandits.
A military source involved in the operation said soldiers immediately rendered first aid to the rescued woman before evacuating her to a medical facility for urgent treatment.
“The bandits shot her and fled when we made contact at Tunga village. We have rescued Mrs. Abubakar. She was bleeding, and our personnel administered emergency first aid before moving her for advanced medical care,” the source revealed.

Retired General Rabe Abubakar has died in bandits’ custody
Security officials have assured the public that the victim is receiving necessary medical attention and is currently under the care of healthcare professionals.
The rescue comes amid heightened security operations across Katsina State and neighbouring regions, where military authorities have intensified efforts to dismantle bandit networks responsible for kidnappings, killings, cattle rustling, and attacks on rural communities.
The abduction of the retired general’s wife drew national attention due to the prominence of the family and the tragic circumstances surrounding the death of Major General Rabe Abubakar.
General Abubakar, a former senior military officer and respected security expert, reportedly died while in captivity after being abducted by bandits. His death sparked widespread condemnation and renewed concerns over the growing insecurity affecting parts of northern Nigeria.
In the aftermath of his death, conflicting accounts emerged regarding the circumstances that led to his demise. While some government officials suggested that health complications, including diabetes, may have contributed to his death, members of the late general’s family publicly disputed the claim, insisting that he died as a result of the harsh conditions and treatment he endured while in captivity.
The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) had earlier explained that it deliberately withheld details concerning the abduction of the retired officer to avoid compromising ongoing rescue efforts. Military authorities maintained that operational secrecy was necessary to improve the chances of securing the safe release of victims and apprehending those responsible.
The successful rescue of Mrs. Abubakar is therefore being viewed as a significant breakthrough in the military’s ongoing efforts against armed criminal groups operating in the North-West.
Security sources revealed that follow-up operations have already commenced across several locations linked to the bandits. Troops are reportedly conducting aggressive clearance missions, intelligence-led raids, and aerial surveillance aimed at tracking down the fleeing suspects and dismantling their hideouts.
According to officials, the military remains committed to ensuring that those responsible for the abduction and subsequent attacks are brought to justice.
“Operations are still ongoing. Our troops are pursuing the fleeing bandits and targeting identified criminal enclaves. The objective is to eliminate the threat and restore lasting peace to affected communities,” another security source stated.
Operation CLEAN SWEEP III forms part of broader military efforts to combat banditry and terrorism across Nigeria’s North-West region. The operation combines ground assaults, intelligence gathering, air support, and collaboration with local communities to disrupt criminal networks and deny armed groups freedom of movement.
Residents of communities across Katsina State have welcomed the rescue, describing it as a morale boost for victims of bandit attacks and a demonstration of the military’s determination to confront insecurity.
Security analysts have also noted that the rescue highlights the growing importance of intelligence-driven operations in tackling banditry. They argue that sustained collaboration between security agencies, local communities, and intelligence networks will be crucial in defeating armed groups that continue to threaten lives and livelihoods across the region.
As security forces continue their pursuit of the fleeing bandits, authorities have reiterated their commitment to protecting citizens and ensuring that criminal elements responsible for violence, kidnappings, and other crimes face the full weight of the law.
