Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has stated that Nigeria has yet to make satisfactory progress in promoting political inclusivity and ensuring that elections are genuinely free and fair.

In his 64th Independence Day message, the 2023 presidential candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) emphasised that democracy is fundamental to the country’s institutions and is rooted in the principles of the rule of law.

He urged the political elite to come together in the noble mission of protecting Nigeria’s democracy from the threat of authoritarianism, highlighting that the nation’s founding fathers united for a common cause and advocated for independence through peaceful political activism.

“What we celebrate today is the fruition of their collective endeavors and those of subsequent generations. As we celebrate Nigeria’s 64th Independence anniversary, I extend my heartfelt congratulations to all Nigerians on this momentous occasion. This is not just a commemoration, but a tribute to the indomitable spirit and unwavering resolve of Nigerians who steadfastly believe in the potential of our homeland.

“In reflecting on this milestone, I am reminded of how our nation has traversed numerous tumultuous phases. Yet, the tenacity of our patriotic citizens, bolstered by the solidarity of our international allies, has fortified our resolve as a resilient entity. On this day, as we mark 64 years of nationhood, I take pride in the enduring establishment of democracy in Nigeria. This anniversary represents the longest period of democratic governance in our history, a testament to our collective commitment”, Mr Atiku added.

He further expressed profound concern that Nigeria’s current political landscape reveals a disturbing erosion of electoral credibility, increasingly compromised by those in power.

He noted that the country’s political environment has become toxic, with opposition parties struggling in a state of disarray while the ruling party seems to exploit internal processes to undermine their effectiveness.

He warned that Nigeria stands on the precipice of a one-party dictatorship, emphasising the urgent responsibility of all politicians and statesmen of integrity to unite and reclaim our democracy from the looming threats of oppression.
