The Lagos State Government has reiterated its commitment to safeguarding consumer rights and promoting sustainable living by ensuring residents are protected from substandard products while encouraging environmentally responsible consumption.
Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu gave this assurance during the week at the 2025 World Consumer Rights Day celebration, organised by the Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency (LASCOPA) at the Marriott Hotel, GRA, Ikeja.
Represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Abimbola Salu-Hudeyin, the governor highlighted the crucial role consumers play in driving economic growth and reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to upholding their rights under the T.H.E.M.E.S Plus development agenda.

Sanwo-Olu emphasised the need for greater awareness and policies that empower consumers to make informed, environmentally responsible choices without sacrificing quality or affordability.
He also noted that the Lagos State Carbon Registry had been established to monitor and reduce carbon emissions across key industries.
Delivering the keynote address, the Honourable Commissioner for Commerce, Cooperatives, Trade, and Investment, Folashade Kaosarat Ambrose-Medebem, stressed the power of consumers in shaping markets and influencing businesses. She pointed out challenges such as limited access to sustainable products, unfair trade practices, and the rising cost of living.
Represented by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Dr Olugbemiga Ayoola Aina, the Commissioner called for a collective effort from government, businesses, and civil society to ensure that the shift toward sustainability remains fair, inclusive, and beneficial to all.
In his remarks, the General Manager of LASCOPA, Afolabi Solebo, reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to protecting consumer rights and promoting fair business practices.
He assured that under Governor Sanwo-Olu’s leadership, the agency would continue advocating for greater consumer empowerment, ensuring equitable access to resources, and fostering responsible consumption that benefits both people and the environment.

“As the world faces pressing environmental, economic, and social challenges, consumer rights must align with policies that promote sustainable living and fair access to essential resources,” Solebo stated.
