All hell broke loose at the Abia state House of Assembly, on Tuesday, as some operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) allegedly beat a policeman attached to the Assembly to pulp.

The development almost turned to a free-for-all between the two sister security agencies as other policemen attached to the Assembly came out to defend their colleague.

Vanguard reports that the DSS personnel numbering about four held a staff of the Assembly riding in a vehicle for dropping off a passenger close to the entrance of the Assembly, against laid-down regulations.

The DSS personnel stationed near the entrance of the Assembly were said to have approached the driver of the vehicle querying why he dropped off passenger at the gate, despite the order barring vehicles to stop in the area.

However, an attempt by the policeman attached to the Assembly to explain to the DSS personnel that the said driver of the vehicle, was also a staff of the House of Assembly infuriated them.

They quickly left the driver and pounced on the policeman, landing a barrage of blows and kicks on the hapless cop.

“The DSS personnel immediately pounced on the policeman and beat him up, questioning why he came to defend the staff. The policeman was only trying to explain the situation before he was assaulted,” an eyewitness said.

It was said that it took the intervention of a senior DSS personnel in the state to calm the situation, even as some legislators were said to have driven past the scene without stopping.

The police in the state is yet to react to the development as of the time of filing this report.
