Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has granted clemency to 117 convicts currently serving prison sentences across the state.

This development was disclosed through a statement issued by the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Ebenezer Adeniyan.

Governor Aiyedatiwa described the gesture as a profound act of compassion and justice, aimed at transforming the lives of those affected by the decision.

He stressed that the move reflects the administration’s commitment to reform and rehabilitation within the state’s justice system.

The decision follows the recommendations from the Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy, underscoring a focus on offering second chances to deserving individuals.

Of the 117 beneficiaries, 19 convicts have been granted outright release, while some death sentences have been commuted to life imprisonment.

Additionally, some inmates will have their sentences reduced, offering them renewed hope for reintegration into society.

This clemency decision was announced in a statement signed by Olukayode Ajulo, OON, SAN, the State Attorney General, and Commissioner for Justice, who also serves as Chairman of the Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy.

Governor Aiyedatiwa signed the release orders on September 27, with the changes slated to take effect on October 1, 2024, coinciding with Nigeria’s 64th Independence anniversary.

The governor’s actions are in line with the powers vested in him by Section 212 (1) (2) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended).

The Advisory Council ensured that each case was meticulously reviewed, adhering to established guidelines and taking into account various factors before making its recommendations.

Mr Ajulo said, “The Council’s deliberations were informed by insights from correctional authorities, legal experts, and distinguished community members, focusing on factors such as the nature of the offenses, length of incarceration, age, health, and behavior of the inmates.

“The compassionate gesture underscores Governor Aiyedatiwa’s unwavering commitment to decongest correctional facilities in Ondo State and is a vital component of ongoing Justice Sector Reforms.

“The approval for these releases not only represents a step towards mercy but also reaffirms the belief in the potential for change and redemption within every individual”.
