Vice President Kashim Shettima has made a passionate plea for religious and ethnic tolerance, noting that Nigeria’s path to global greatness depends on the ability of its citizens to embrace their shared heritage over their differences.
Speaking on Wednesday, during a visit to the Gbong Gwom Jos, HRH Jacob Gyang Buba, he emphasised that Nigerians are fundamentally one people.
“We are all connected one way or the other,” Shettima noted. “What binds us together supersedes what separates us.”

Shettima’s visit to Plateau State coincided with a significant political shift: the formal reception of Governor Caleb Mutfwang and other top political figures into the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Highlighting the spirit of reconciliation, Shettima pointed to the new bond between the governor and the APC National Chairman, Nentawe Yilwatda—who was Mutfwang’s primary opponent in the last election.
Shettima remarked that this realignment is a “good omen” for Plateau, stating that development is impossible without the peace that such political unity fosters.
He lauded the Gbong Gwom Jos and other traditional leaders as the “custodians of cultural heritage” who play a vital role in upholding the fabric of society through their peace-building efforts.
Welcoming him, the Gbong Gwom Jos, who also serves as the Chairman of the Plateau State Council of Chiefs and Emirs, used the occasion to call for heightened security measures.
While acknowledging the work of current security agencies, the monarch appealed for “true reconciliation” across all regions of Nigeria.
“Nigerians must respect one another and live in peace,” the Gbong Gwom stated. “Islam and Christianity are not in support of acts of insurgency or trouble making… Why should we ferment trouble or kill one another?”
Mutfwang, in his remarks, commended the harmonious working relationship between President Bola Tinubu and Shettima, describing it as a model for the country.

Shettima’s entourage included high-ranking officials such as Nasarawa State Governor Abdullahi Sule, Yilwatda, and former Deputy Speaker Idris Wase, signaling a unified front for the North Central region.
He concluded his visit by thanking the people of Plateau for their hospitality, expressing total confidence that the state’s new political landscape would ensure lasting tranquility and the delivery of more “dividends of democracy.”
