Primary and secondary school teachers in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have announced an indefinite strike, ordering a complete shutdown of classrooms from Monday, January2026.
The directive was issued by the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), FCT Wing, following a call by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) for all its affiliate unions in the territory to intensify ongoing industrial action.
The decision was contained in a communiqué signed by the NUT FCT Chairman, Abdullahi Shafas; Secretary, Margaret Jethro; and Publicity Secretary, Ibukun Adekeye.
The union explained that although it initially expressed concerns about the coordination of the strike led by the Joint Union Action Committee (JUAC), the NLC’s intervention made it necessary for teachers to join other workers in solidarity.
According to the communiqué, all teachers in FCT public primary and secondary schools are to stay away from classrooms until further notice.
Teachers within the city centre and surrounding areas were also directed to assemble at the National Industrial Court on Gimbiya Street, Area 11, Abuja, in support of JUAC during a court hearing involving the committee.

The NUT said the action was part of a broader struggle to ensure that longstanding welfare and salary-related issues affecting teachers and other workers are resolved. Union leaders urged members to remain peaceful and united, assuring them that updates would be provided as negotiations and legal proceedings continue.
The strike comes amid an ongoing indefinite industrial action by FCT Administration workers, which began on January 19 over unresolved issues including unpaid entitlements, pension deductions, and salary administration concerns.
