Renaissance Africa Energy Company Limited has paid tribute to the late Deputy Governor of Bayelsa State, Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, describing him as a strategic partner who was instrumental in the firm’s seamless operations within the state.
The management of the indigenous oil firm—which recently made headlines for its landmark acquisition of the Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC)—paid a condolence visit to Governor Douye Diri at the Government House yesterday.
Leading the delegation, Igo Weli, the company’s Vice President for Relations and Sustainable Development, noted that while Ewhrudjakpo passed away at the age of 60, his legacy in public service far exceeded his years.

“It is not about how long one lived but how well that matters,” Weli remarked. “The departed deputy governor was a core member of an excellent team. He stood on behalf of the government in support of our operations, acting as a pillar of support and a true friend to our firm.”
Weli further pledged that Renaissance Africa Energy would actively support the funeral proceedings to ensure the late Senator receives a befitting final farewell.
A visibly moved Diri thanked the energy firm for the visit, reflecting on the deep personal bond he shared with his late deputy.
He described Ewhrudjakpo not just as a political subordinate, but as a “brother and friend” who was central to the state’s governance.
Diri recalled their shared “wilderness experience”—the legal and political battles they navigated together before assuming office—stating that they “prayed and fasted together” during those trying times.
“He was part and parcel of our engine of government,” the governor said. “His impact and legacies will continue to speak for him.”
The state is set to begin a four-day series of obsequies in honour of Ewhrudjakpo.
