The Jigawa State Police Command has arrested a newlywed woman for allegedly poisoning her husband with rat poison in Gauza village, Jahun Local Government Area of the state.
The incident occurred on January 23, 2026, at about 5:00 pm, shortly after the deceased reportedly ate a meal prepared by his wife at their home.
Confirming the development in a statement issued on Saturday in Dutse, the state capital, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Shi’isu Adam, said detectives from the Jahun Police Division were immediately deployed following a report of the sudden death.

According to the police, the deceased consumed his lunch at home before suddenly falling seriously ill. He was rushed to a nearby hospital for medical attention but was pronounced dead while receiving treatment.
SP Adam said preliminary investigations raised suspicion around the circumstances of the man’s death, prompting the arrest of his wife as the principal suspect.
“During interrogation, the suspect confessed to poisoning her husband’s food with rat poison,” the police spokesperson said.
He added that the suspect claimed she had sent her cousin to purchase the rat poison used to carry out the act.
The PPRO further disclosed that the woman told investigators she was forced into the marriage by her parents, a situation she alleged caused emotional distress and led to her actions.
Following her confession, the Commissioner of Police in Jigawa State ordered that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Dutse for a comprehensive investigation.
SP Adam said the police would ensure a thorough and professional investigation to establish all facts surrounding the incident.
“Upon the conclusion of the investigation, the suspect will be charged to court for prosecution,” he said.
The police command also used the opportunity to caution members of the public against taking the law into their own hands, particularly in resolving family or marital disputes.
The statement urged residents to remain calm and law-abiding, stressing that disputes should be resolved through lawful and peaceful means.
The command warned that resorting to violence or self-help often leads to irreversible consequences, including loss of life and long-term legal implications.
The police assured the public of their commitment to justice, adding that the safety of lives and property remains a top priority across the state.
“The suspect is currently in police custody and will be prosecuted accordingly,” SP Adam said, assuring that justice would be served in the case.
