The All Progressives Congress (APC) has paid glowing tribute to a former Governor of Osun State and its first Interim National Chairman, Chief Bisi Akande, as he marks his 87th birthday, commending his enduring contributions to Nigeria’s democracy and political development.
In a statement issued on Friday, the APC National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, described Akande as a statesman whose lifelong commitment to public service and progressive politics has left an indelible mark on the nation’s political history.
According to the party, Akande’s career reflects extraordinary dedication to Nigeria’s political growth and democratic evolution, particularly his role in the formation and early leadership of the APC.
“Baba Akande’s life of service reflects extraordinary contributions to Nigeria’s political development and democratic evolution,” the statement read. “As Interim Chairman of the APC, he provided principled leadership and laid the foundation for the historic political hurricane that swept away the incumbent government in 2015, birthing a new era of progressive governance in our country.”
The party noted that Akande’s stewardship during the APC’s formative stage was pivotal in uniting various political tendencies under a single platform. This process ultimately led to the party’s landmark victory in the 2015 general elections.
Describing him as a committed progressive and a devoted follower of Chief Obafemi Awolowo’s political philosophy, the APC said Akande was a leading advocate for Nigeria’s return to democratic rule after years of military governance.
“A quintessential Awoist and progressive, Baba Akande was a leading campaigner for Nigeria’s return to democracy. His reputation as a man of high integrity, discipline, courage and illustrious service stands as a stellar benchmark for leadership in our country,” the statement added.
The ruling party further noted that even at 87, Akande remains a respected voice of reason within Nigeria’s political space, admired for his moral clarity and unwavering patriotism.
“At 87, Baba Akande remains an eloquent voice of reason and an embodiment of the moral conscience of our nation’s political establishment. His uprightness and steadfast love of country continue to instruct today’s leaders and inspire the next generation of nation builders,” Morka said.
The APC also acknowledged Akande’s continued support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration and its Renewed Hope Agenda, which the party said is focused on delivering sustainable development and prosperity for Nigerians.
The statement concluded by wishing the elder statesman good health, greater wisdom, and renewed strength as he continues to serve the nation and humanity.
