The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has intensified efforts to broaden its political base ahead of the 2027 general election, calling on former President Goodluck Jonathan, former Senate President Bukola Saraki, and other prominent political figures to join the party.
The call followed the inauguration of the party’s North-East Zonal Congress Committee, which the ADC described as part of a renewed drive to strengthen its internal structures, promote internal democracy, and reposition itself as a viable national alternative.
The development was disclosed in a communiqué issued on Tuesday by the factional National Chairman of the ADC, Mr Nafiu Gombe, after the inauguration ceremony held in Gombe State on 11 January. The event, organised by the party’s national leadership, was presided over by Dr Muhammad Muhammad.
In the communiqué, Gombe described the inauguration as a critical milestone in consolidating the ADC’s presence in the North-East geopolitical zone. He said the move was aimed at ensuring transparent, credible, and inclusive congresses across the zone, in line with the party’s constitution and democratic ideals.
According to the party, key officials were ratified and inaugurated to oversee the zonal congress process. Mrs Patience Alex was appointed Chairperson of the North-East Zonal Congress Committee, while Mr Abayomi Adekunle was inaugurated as Chairman of the Zonal Appeal Committee.
Gombe said the appointments underscored the ADC’s commitment to internal democracy and its determination to build a credible political platform capable of attracting Nigerians across party, ethnic, and regional divides.
Beyond internal party matters, the ADC leadership used the occasion to make a direct appeal to serving governors, elder politicians, and national leaders to join the party. Gombe said the ADC was positioning itself as a serious alternative force in Nigeria’s evolving political landscape.
“The authentic national leadership of the ADC passionately appeals to and invites the following eminent personalities to join the party in its mission to rebuild and reposition Nigeria,” he said.
Those invited include Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed; Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Fintiri; former Senate President Bukola Saraki; former President Goodluck Jonathan; Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde; Abia State Governor Alex Otti; and Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
According to Gombe, the party believes that the experience, leadership, and patriotism of these figures are vital to uniting national efforts towards good governance and sustainable development.
The ADC reiterated its commitment to providing a credible, inclusive, and progressive platform focused on accountability, national unity, and development. It said it would continue mobilising Nigerians across all regions in pursuit of a new political direction.
The move comes amid growing political realignments ahead of 2027, barely weeks after the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, defected to the David Mark-led ADC, further fuelling speculation about emerging alliances in the build-up to the next general election.
