Vice President Kashim Shettima has reaffirmed the Federal Government’s unwavering resolve to fully equip the Nigerian Armed Forces.
He promised that under the President Bola Tinubu administration, the military will be empowered to decisively subdue the security crises facing the nation.
Speaking on Friday, during a special Juma’at Prayer at the National Mosque in Abuja, he signalled a new era of military support as the country commenced the 2026 Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day.

In a significant shift, the Federal Government recently renamed the annual January 15th observance from “Armed Forces Remembrance Day” to “Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day.”
This redesignation, highlighted by the Shettima, serves a dual purpose: celebrating the bravery and dedication of active-duty personnel and acknowledging the ultimate sacrifice of heroes who died protecting Nigeria’s territorial integrity.
“Our prayer is for Allah to forgive the rest of our deceased officers and men, and may God grant their families the fortitude to bear the irreparable losses,” Shettima prayed during the solemn session.
He expressed strong optimism that the current administration’s “dynamic and purposeful leadership” would bridge the gap between national crisis and national prosperity.
He emphasised that the government’s strategy focuses on providing the military with the institutional support and tools needed to restore stability.
The Presidency outlined several key pledges, including deliberate efforts to strengthen the capacity of security agencies to effectively combat terrorism, banditry and insurgency.
It also acknowledged the “irreparable losses” endured by the families of fallen military personnel and called on the nation to rally in support of them.
Furthermore, the Presidency expressed confidence that, in the fullness of time, the country would enjoy lasting peace and national prosperity as a result of ongoing security reforms.
The Juma’at prayers will flag off a week of commemorative activities across the country.
This will be followed by interdenominational church services scheduled for Sunday.

The activities will culminate in a wreath-laying ceremony on Thursday, 15 January, at the National Arcade in Abuja, with similar ceremonies held simultaneously across all 36 states.
Shettima asked for divine protection for serving officers and men, stating, “By God’s grace, we shall have an enduring peace in Nigeria.”
