Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has expressed deep sorrow following a major fire outbreak at the Great Nigeria House on Lagos Island, which occurred on Wednesday, December 24, 2025.
The governor visited the Balogun commercial district on Thursday for an on-the-spot assessment of the damage.
After touring the affected area, Sanwo-Olu noted that the scale of the tragedy and the pain of the affected traders could not be adequately captured by official reports.

In a statement issued on his X page after his visit, the governor commended the bravery of the first responders who battled the inferno throughout the night.
He thanked the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) and all joint agencies and emergency responders.
Sanwo-Olu credited their “courage and dedication” with saving lives and preventing the blaze from consuming even more structures in the densely packed commercial hub.
The governor extended his thoughts and prayers to the business owners and residents whose livelihoods were impacted by the disaster.
He emphasised that the state government is committed to providing ongoing support as the full extent of the loss is determined.
“No written report can truly reflect the pain or the full extent of this loss,” the governor remarked.

“Lagos has always shown strength in difficult moments, and I believe we will get through this together.”
The fire, which originated on the upper floors of the high-rise building, prompted a massive multi-agency response to bring it under control.
While the physical damage to goods and property is extensive, the governor’s visit focused on coordinating relief efforts and ensuring the safety of the surrounding buildings.
He assured that the assessment of the site will continue to ensure the structural integrity of the area and to facilitate a smooth recovery for the affected commercial community.
