The Lagos State Government has expressed commitment to a partnership with the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) to enhance educational standards and ensure every child has access to quality schooling.
This commitment was made by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, represented by his Deputy, Obafemi Hamzat, during a courtesy visit by the UBEC Board.

Sanwo-Olu stated that education is the bedrock of national development and must be prioritised.
He declared, “In 2025, no child in Nigeria should be left out of school,” and emphasised that education is a fundamental human right.
The governor affirmed that the state would collaborate with UBEC to provide qualified teachers, security, and infrastructure for the Smart Model School recently built by the commission in Badagry.
He highlighted the importance of inter-state peer reviews and knowledge sharing, suggesting that best practices from Lagos and other states could be replicated nationwide.
He also commended UBEC’s new funding model, which allows states to tailor resource applications to their specific needs.
Speaking earlier, UBEC’s Executive Secretary, Aisha Garba, explained that the board was in Lagos to seek support for the new Smart Model School in Badagry.
She noted that the school, which can accommodate nearly a thousand students, is equipped with modern technology and requires the state government’s support to be fully functional and sustainable.

Garba praised the state for its leadership in educational outcomes and revealed that the commission chose Lagos to host its quarterly meeting for the southern zone to allow other State Universal Basic Education Boards (SUBEBs) to study the “Lagos model.”
She expressed hope that a partnership with Lagos would also help to involve the private sector in improving education quality and access across other states in the country.
