Super Eagles goalkeeper, Maduka Okoye, has been named Udinese Player of the Season following an impressive campaign in the Italian Serie A.
Okoye earned the recognition for his standout performances for Udinese Calcio throughout the season, despite facing an early setback after being suspended for the first two months over an alleged involvement in a match-fixing investigation.
The 26-year-old goalkeeper, however, made a strong return to action, reclaiming his position as the club’s first-choice shot stopper and delivering a series of commanding displays in goal.
His performances against top Italian sides, including Juventus and AC Milan, were particularly noted, as he produced crucial saves that helped Udinese secure valuable results during the campaign.
Over the course of the season, Okoye recorded 10 clean sheets in 29 Serie A appearances, underlining his consistency and importance to the team.
His resurgence in form has also earned him a shortlist nomination for the Serie A Player of the Month award for May, further highlighting his impact in the closing stages of the season.
Udinese, commonly referred to as the Zebras, have benefited significantly from Okoye’s return to form, with his shot-stopping ability and composure between the posts playing a key role in stabilising the team’s defensive performances.
Football analysts have praised his mental strength and resilience, noting his ability to recover from an early-season setback and still deliver high-level performances in one of Europe’s most competitive leagues.
Okoye’s recognition is expected to boost his profile further as he continues to establish himself as one of Nigeria’s key goalkeeping talents in Europe.
The award also adds to growing optimism among Nigerian football fans ahead of future international competitions, where he remains an important figure for the Super Eagles setup.
