The United States Embassy Abuja has issued a security advisory to American citizens in Nigeria, cautioning against a possible protest in the federal capital territory amid heightened tensions linked to the ongoing US-Israel-Iran conflict.
Earlier on Monday, the US government released a global security alert urging its citizens worldwide, including those in Nigeria, to exercise increased vigilance following escalating hostilities in the Middle East.
The advisory noted that the evolving situation could pose risks to personal safety and travel plans, including possible disruptions to international air travel.
In a post shared on X on Wednesday, the embassy warned that there is “a high potential for protests in Abuja today” and advised Americans in the city to remain alert.
The mission added that past demonstrations of a similar nature “have resulted in violent clashes between the group and Nigerian security forces”, raising fears of possible escalation.
As a precautionary measure, the embassy said it “strongly recommends that all U.S. citizens in Abuja remain in their residences on Wednesday, March 4.”
It further urged citizens to steer clear of protest locations and crowded areas, remain cautious if caught near large gatherings, and closely monitor local media reports for updates.
The advisory also encouraged Americans to “be aware of your surroundings”, “keep a low profile”, and review personal security arrangements.
Additional safety recommendations included keeping mobile phones fully charged, carrying valid identification at all times, staying vigilant in public spaces such as shopping malls and places of worship, and varying travel routes and schedules to reduce predictability.
Despite the warning, the embassy confirmed that its consular section in Abuja and the United States Consulate General Lagos remain open for services.
Citizens were also encouraged to enrol in the Smart Traveller Enrolment Programme (STEP) and regularly check the embassy’s official website for further security updates.
