The Ondo State Police Command has confirmed the fatal attack of a farmer along Agunla Farm Road in Ayede-Ogbese, Akure North Local Government Area. The incident reportedly occurred on Monday night, prompting concern among residents.
The police spokesperson, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, told reporters that the case was reported at approximately 9:30 p.m. by a concerned citizen. Preliminary investigations revealed that the deceased, identified as Ben Daniels, and a companion, James Unekwu, were riding a motorcycle to a local camp when unknown gunmen allegedly ambushed them.
Jimoh stated that Unekwu managed to escape the assailants, while Daniels was murdered, with his body abandoned along the roadside. Police operatives promptly arrived at the scene, evacuated the corpse, and deposited it at the mortuary for preservation and autopsy.
“Unekwu is currently in police protective custody as tensions rise over a possible conspiracy, while investigations continue,” Jimoh added.
The police command urged residents to remain calm, avoid blocking highways, and refrain from engaging in actions that could disrupt public peace. “The grievances of concerned persons are noted, and due process will be followed to ensure the perpetrators are brought to justice. The state Commissioner of Police assures the good people of Ondo State that the command remains resolute in combating crime and criminality. Residents are encouraged to continue their lawful activities without fear,” he said.
Despite the police warning, youths in Ayede-Ogbese reportedly barricaded the Akure–Owo highway on Tuesday morning to protest the killings, preventing vehicular movement. The blockade highlights growing frustration in the community over recurrent violence and perceived insecurity in the area.
Authorities have pledged to intensify investigations and ensure that those responsible for Daniels’ murder are apprehended. Meanwhile, residents have been urged to exercise restraint while law enforcement works to restore order.
