The International Criminal Court in The Hague on Thursday issued warrants for the arrest of Hamas leader, Mohammed Diab Ibrahim Al-Masri (also known as Mohammed Deif) as well Israel’s President, Benjamin Netanyahu and former defence minister, Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity over the war in Gaza and the October 2023 attacks that triggered it.

France’s reaction to the International Criminal Court’s arrest warrant for Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu will be in line with the court’s statutes, the foreign ministry spokesman said on Thursday, but declined to say whether France would arrest the leader if he came to the country.

When asked during a news conference if France would arrest Netanyahu, Christophe Lemoine said it was a legally complicated question.

“It’s a point that is legally complex so I’m not going to comment on it today,” he said.

Israel’s main opposition leader Yair Lapid also denounced the move by the Hague-based court, calling it “a reward for terrorism”.

There was no immediate comment from Netanyahu or Gallant.
