Tiger Woods: Ryder Cup players should receive $5m for charity

Tiger Woods has proposed that each American Ryder Cup player should receive $5 million, with the entirety donated to charity. His comments reignite a long-standing debate about player compensation in the event, which historically has never included direct payments.

Speaking at the Hero World Challenge in the Bahamas, Woods emphasized the Ryder Cup’s immense revenue and the potential for funds to support charitable causes.

“The Ryder Cup makes so much money,” Woods said. “Why can’t we allocate it to various charities? I hope the players get $5 million each and donate it. It’s so hard to make the team—what’s wrong with that?”

This follows reports that next year’s U.S. players will receive $400,000 each for their participation, a move that has drawn contrasting opinions. European star Rory McIlroy has publicly stated he would “pay to play” for his team.

Woods acknowledged the differing attitudes: “If the Europeans want to pay to be in the Ryder Cup, that’s their decision. It subsidizes their tour, so it’s a big event for them.”

Woods’ Health and Future in Golf

At 48, Woods remains sidelined due to recurring back injuries but insists his passion for competition remains strong.

“The fire still burns to compete,” he said. “The difference is my body’s recovery isn’t what it used to be.”

Woods underwent his sixth back surgery in September to address pain radiating to his legs, which had disrupted his 2024 season. Despite the challenges, the 15-time major winner is optimistic about a return to form.

“I feel like I’m getting stronger, but I’ve got a long way to go to compete against these guys,” Woods admitted.

His last competitive outing was at The Open in July, where he missed the cut. Fans eagerly await his return as he continues to rehabilitate for a hopeful 2025 comeback.
