Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has rubbished claims of a rift with star midfielder Kevin De Bruyne, affirming his commitment to seeing the Belgian return to his best after an injury-hit campaign.
De Bruyne, 33, has struggled for game time this season, starting just four Premier League matches. Following an abdominal injury, he has managed only 72 minutes across five substitute appearances since his return last month.
During Sunday’s 2-0 defeat to Liverpool, De Bruyne entered with 12 minutes remaining and nearly scored, only to be thwarted by goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher. This prompted pundits Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville to question Guardiola’s treatment of the midfielder, suggesting tensions between the pair.
Speaking ahead of City’s clash with Nottingham Forest, Guardiola dismissed the speculation.
“People say I’ve got a problem with Kevin. Do you think I don’t want Kevin to play? He’s delivered the biggest success in this club’s history,” said Guardiola.
De Bruyne has endured recurring injuries, including a significant hamstring issue that sidelined him for months last season. With his contract expiring next summer and no talks of an extension yet, De Bruyne’s focus remains on regaining fitness.
“I’d love to have Kevin at his peak, but he’s not 26 anymore,” Guardiola admitted. “He needs time to find his rhythm after injuries. He’s desperate to help us, and his moments of brilliance remind us what he’s capable of.”
Guardiola’s reassurances come as City looks to recover from a challenging run of six defeats and one draw in their last seven games.
